Training 2009 – Presenting With Power

April 14, 2009 - 11:29 pm No Comments

It was a 2 days training or i should say a 1.5 days training instead, because the 1st day was a full learning and grasping session of what you should apply into your presentation, steps to prepare and organize your presentation and the PRESENT.  It is this abbreviation that I remember most throughout this whole 2 days training process.

P- Professional Presence

R – Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse

E – Engaging with your Audience

S – Hand Shake

E – Eye-contact

N – Navigation of your presentation

T – Take Away

And the most important part is how to overcome your fears and jitters before your presentation :) Why i say it is a 1.5 days is because another half of the day, was “us” the trainees doing a presentation! I have this problem of having butterfly in my stomach and jitters before and at the beginning of every presentation i make and a few tips on how to overcome is given.

1) Carry something small with you – in your pocket / hold it with you before the presentation – Example: paper clip. Imagine Transfer all your fears, burdens, nervousness, whatever bad into that small little paper clip. (That is why you see speakers having one of their hands always in their pocket :) )

2) Before the presentation – Say to your self – “My Big ME Wants to Speak and the Small me will keep Quiet” Repeat it up to 20 times in your head or better still say it out loud, so that your sub-conscious mind will shut-up.

3) Worst come to worst, when during a presentation you feel stuck and can’t go on anymore and need a short little break – Ask Questions, example: I give you 2 minutes, to think of this scenario, give a question that your audience can imagine and engage into the topic that you are about to speak. Or I give you 5 minutes and discuss among yourselves “what is the bla bla bla” a question to help them understand further. Meanwhile you can calm yourself down and take a deep breath on how to continue with your presentation.

Overall, I would say I have learnt much and till then practice makes perfect to overcome whatever fears you have and my sharing session will come next Tuesday for me to share and present what I’ve learnt, so i guess is the best outcome of this training ;)

The speaker was Mr. Murphy Lum, from a technical background, very good technically, but very shy and keep avoiding public presentation till he could not avoid it anymore. And to move up in career we are sure at some point in time more and more presentation skills are needed, be it a technical manager or PR manager, presentation skills are fairly important in this century’s career progression.

Survival skills for New Managers – Training

November 27, 2008 - 1:16 am No Comments

stated in the brochure the venue was at Park Royal, then confirmed with the lady in-charged is at JW Marriot, when I am there, it is suppose to be at The Ritz Carlton Hotel. But luckily it is both under the YTL Group, and the hotels are both inter-connected :) It is my second time attending an event at The Ritz Carlton. To be honest, I quite like hotel finishing as well as how the staffs personalized themselves to their guest.

Speaker: Mr. Thomas Lai, who have 10 years experience as a professional trainer and another 10 years before that mainly involve in the Human Resource as well as providing training and talks. I see him as acting, I feel that he actions are not that “real”, well that’s just my judgement, he might be that “stiff” in his actions. Well, all i can say that he is a humble man, always striving to learn more and does not know how to relax and enjoy life and travel (well the last description was what he said)

Overall, the training is quite enjoyable, with activities, games given, brain teaser and a 20 minutes video, it make things interesting and not plain boring just talking with presentation slides. This is my second training that my company have sent me, this is definitely more practical then the previous. At least more information are absorb into my mind and I get to understand myself better and areas where I can improve on. The sad thing is that we did not finish 1 topic and there is this 1 topic who was quickly browse through, which I find it quite an important area for me, managing decision making skills.

Guess I just need to read it on my own, and read on the leadership skills article he have given. Overall, I will give a 7-8 for this training. Surprisingly, I think I am the youngest in the group, so alot to learn from people around you :)

Also, I met with the business owner of the training provider, what a co-incident he have proposed to my company early last week with a few other training topics he suggest to offer our office internal training :) Well, let’s wait, I hope to attend the Leadership program where I feel I should improve on.
